OUR STUDENTS

Living Word Academy students are involved in many activities both in and outside of school. Whether it's volunteering at church, helping the community, exercising their minds and bodies in a multitude of ways, or just passing some free time, they are always growing in ways that help them spiritually and develop their talents.

Extracurricular Activities

Living Word Academy provides a number of activities for the children to be a part of both during the school year and the summer. These activities give an opportunity to all the kids to learn leadership, service, craftsmanship, teamwork, skills, and more.

Outdoor Ministry

Exposure to and education about the great outdoors has long been available to students of Living Word Academy. This comes in the form of school field trips to area parks and nature centers, and summertime activities at Living Word Camp. Beyond that, outdoor connection is offered through a program we call Get Out for Life, which focuses on wilderness immersion and adventure sports. During the school year, there are hikes, snow tubing and ski/snowboard trips, as well as cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and even overnight camping—for those willing to embrace the colder weather. Summer is when Get Out for Life really ramps up, with whitewater rafting, river tubing, bike rides, backpacking and canoe trips, and more hiking. While some area schools (surprisingly few actually) have outdoor clubs, what’s special about Get Out for Life at LWA is the holistic approach to outdoor education. We’ve identified these beneficial aspects of outdoor involvement: physical activity, enhanced sensory acuity, positive mental and psychological health, wholesome human interaction (sans cell phones), cultivating an outdoor lifestyle, and most significantly, spiritual development. Besides imparting skills and safely facilitating extended time in nature, leaders strive to live out and impart a set of core values.

Core Values of Get Out for Life

  1. Exaltation – The Bible teaches that God is present and recognizable in His creation. We will seek to discover God in all that we observe and experience in the outdoors and give Him praise accordingly.

  2. Edification – Inasmuch as many outdoor activities involve other people, we will strive to build up one another in love and in the truth of God’s Word.

  3. Education – Not wanting to be oblivious to the natural realm, we are committed to studying nature and the physical and living systems found therein.

  4. Experience – While on the earth, Jesus Christ was a master of experiential, immersive teaching, and He made extensive use of the outdoors as a backdrop for His lessons. We believe the Lord hasn’t changed, and we will, therefore, look beyond the thrill of adventure, having ears to hear what our Maker would communicate to us in our experiences.

  5. Expression – “In the beginning was the Word…” Like Jesus, we are called to express the image of God and will endeavor to do so through speaking, singing, writing, service, and other expressive forms.

  6. Example – Jesus led His followers by example. We will use the outdoors as a laboratory for fostering leadership by allowing young leaders to teach others who have less experience and develop a capacity for identifying constraints in the physical environment, assessing group dynamics, and becoming adept at communication and decision-making.

  7. Evangelism – Believers are called to be a witness to the world. We are determined to take advantage of every opportunity to let the light of Christ shine through us and to preach the Good News to those in need. So help us, Lord.
